FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE  – Winter sea ice in the Arctic has reached a record low, continuing a years-long downward trend, NASA reported Thursday.

Ice researcher Linette Boisvert said the region is entering the summer season with significantly less ice than usual.

“We will enter this next summer season with less ice to begin with,” Boisvert said in a press release. “It doesn’t bode well for the future.”

NASA noted that in recent years, less new ice has formed during winter, and existing ice has failed to accumulate as it once did.

Scientists warn that the shrinking ice cover could have far-reaching consequences for the Arctic ecosystem and global climate patterns.
