Police in Larnaca are investigating the death of a 78‑year‑old man and the possible poisoning of four other people in what authorities described as an unusual case.
According to police, the man’s wife fell ill on Sunday and was taken to a hospital, where she remains under care. Her 78‑year‑old husband died later the same day.
On Monday, friends and relatives gathered at the couple’s home to offer condolences. During the visit, three people lost consciousness and were taken to a hospital.
Two of them were given antidotes for suspected poisoning. The third person was reported to be in a coma, though doctors said the individual’s condition was improving.
Authorities said scientific tests will be carried out to determine what happened and whether something consumed by the five people caused the symptoms.
Additional examinations at the home are scheduled for Tuesday morning, and samples will be collected for laboratory analysis.
