Germany will reintroduce subsidies for private buyers of electric vehicles from Jan. 1, 2026, reviving incentives that were halted at the end of 2023.
The new program will apply to newly registered battery‑electric vehicles, selected plug‑in hybrids and extended‑range electric models. Subsidies will range from 1,500 to 6,000 euros, depending on household income, family size and vehicle type.
Germany first introduced EV purchase incentives in 2016 but ended them in late 2023 amid a federal budget shortfall.
That program supported about 2.1 million vehicle purchases at a cost of roughly 10 billion euros, according to the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
After subsidies were withdrawn, new battery‑electric registrations fell more than 27 percent in 2024 to around 380,000 units, according to the KBA road traffic authority.
The market rebounded in 2025, with registrations jumping 43 percent and accounting for about one‑fifth of all new passenger cars.
