Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou says the government is advancing its strategy to address Cyprus’ long‑standing water‑supply challenges, stressing that the country’s water policy is now at an advanced stage.
SShe said the plan includes the continuous operation and expansion of desalination plants, upgrades to the water‑distribution network, and improved maintenance of dams to prevent losses. It also calls for more prudent water consumption.
Panayiotou highlighted what she described as the most significant policy decision of the Christodoulides administration: ending the practice of keeping desalination units in reserve.
From now on, she said, desalination plants will operate without interruption, with the goal of fully covering demand so that water stored in dams can be allocated to farmers.
