President Nikos Christodoulides said Wednesday that his government’s main objective in the upcoming pension reform is to deliver a substantial increase in payments for low‑income retirees.
Christodoulides made the remarks during a meeting at the Presidential Palace with delegations from the Cyprus Workers’ Confederation (SEK), the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) and the Democratic Labour Federation of Cyprus (DEOK).
“It is always a pleasure to meet with you,” the president told union representatives, adding that the government views the unions as “partners and fellow travelers.” He praised their long‑standing contribution to the country’s development, noting that workers remain a central pillar of the economy.
The unions raised four issues for discussion, and Christodoulides said the government was prepared to address them, with the relevant ministers and officials present.
He added one more item to the agenda: the pension reform planned for 2026. “It is one of the most important issues for us,” he said. “For the first time since 1980, we will address this matter so extensively, with the sole aim of increasing pensions. We want to see a meaningful rise, particularly for low‑income pensioners.”
The government aims to complete the reform process, including parliamentary approval, within 2026.
