The Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare will host an Earth Hour 2026 event in Amiantos, Troodos, combining hiking, local food and stargazing.
The event, organized in cooperation with the Troodos Development Company, the Troodos Geopark, the Troodos Observatory and the Hellenic Mountaineering Association of Nicosia, will take place on Saturday, March 28. The Transport Ministry is supporting the initiative.
Earth Hour, launched in Sydney in 2007 and held annually on the last Saturday of March, invites citizens worldwide to switch off lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. as a symbolic gesture for climate and environmental awareness.
The 2026 edition marks the initiative’s 20th anniversary.
The Troodos event includes a guided mountain hike, local refreshments, short presentations on Earth Hour, and astronomy activities during the symbolic blackout.
Weather permitting, participants will observe constellations and celestial objects through telescopes.
To reduce private‑vehicle use, buses will run from Nicosia and Limassol to the event site and back.
Participants must register in advance — especially those using bus transport — via email or phone.
Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles and dress warmly due to low mountain temperatures.
Event schedule highlights: • 16:00 — Bus departures from Nicosia and Limassol • 17:00–18:30 — Guided circular hike (difficulty level 1) • 19:00–19:30 — Local food and refreshments • 19:30–20:30 — Presentations and greetings at the Troodos Geopark Visitor Centre • 20:30–21:30 — Earth Hour: stargazing and sky‑mapping activities • 21:40 — Bus departures back to Nicosia and Limassol
The commissioner’s office said the event aims to reconnect the public with nature and promote sustainable habits beyond the symbolic hour.
