Health Minister Neofytos Charalambides has said that, despite significant progress in recent years, the fight against smoking remains demanding as new tobacco and nicotine products continue to enter the market, often aimed at young people.

He warned of the rapid spread of these products and their impact on public health.

Speaking at a news conference marking World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31, Charalambides called for intensified efforts against smoking and nicotine addiction, with a particular focus on protecting children and adolescents.

He said the Health Ministry will continue its efforts “with consistency and determination” to curb smoking and shield future generations from the harmful effects of nicotine and tobacco products.

Charalambides highlighted what he described as troubling marketing tactics used by tobacco and nicotine companies, including attractive packaging, flavors and targeted promotion on social media, which he said aim to create a new generation of dependent users.

Referring to this year’s World Health Organization campaign theme, “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction,” he said these practices attempt to portray nicotine products as modern, appealing or less harmful, lowering the perceived risk among young people.

He said such trends are particularly concerning when directed at children and teenagers, undermining long‑standing global efforts to reduce smoking and protect public health.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening prevention, public awareness and smoking‑cessation policies, along with strict enforcement of anti‑smoking laws. He said the goal is to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all citizens.

Charalambides added that protecting public health is not solely the responsibility of the state but a collective effort requiring cooperation among families, schools, health professionals and society.
