President Nikos Christodoulides has described the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus as the pinnacle of the island’s long history, marking the 66th anniversary of the signing of the Zurich-London Agreements.
Writing on X, the President said the Republic’s establishment was the culmination of the Cypriot people’s long struggle, reaching its height with the national liberation and anti-colonial campaign waged by EOKA, which ultimately paved the way to independence.
He described the Republic of Cyprus as the island’s most significant achievement, reaffirming that its respect, protection and continued strengthening — together with the bolstering of all its sources of power, both domestically and on the international stage — remain of the utmost priority.
Within this framework, Mr Christodoulides added, it would become possible to pursue, with credible claims, the long-sought goals of liberation, an end to the Turkish occupation, and the reunification of the homeland, through a solution that is both workable and sustainable — one capable of offering fresh prospects and hope, and new horizons of peace and security.
