Cyprus ranked first in EU for bathing‑water quality

Cyprus has been ranked first in the European Union for bathing‑water quality for the fourth consecutive year, according to results released by the European Commission.

The Commission’s 2025 report found that all 123 monitored coastal sites in the Republic met the EU’s strictest standards, with 100% classified as “excellent.”

Greece followed with 97.1% and Bulgaria with 96.9%.

Authorities carried out monthly sampling from May to October 2025, along with an additional round before the start of the swimming season.

The Environment Department, which oversees implementation of the EU directive, worked with public‑health services, the State General Laboratory and local authorities.

Officials said the results highlight the link between bathing‑water quality, public health and tourism, and reinforce Cyprus’s image as a destination with clean and safe beaches.
