Iran claims strikes on US bases across Gulf as retaliation for fresh American attacks

Iran’s armed forces claimed on Friday to have struck US bases and facilities in Syria, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, in retaliation for fresh American strikes on Iran and its infrastructure.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its aerospace forces had launched a surprise attack on a US military centre at Syria’s al-Tanf base, killing a number of American personnel and destroying a radar system and several helicopters used for special operations, according to statements carried by its official outlet, Sepah News.

The IRGC said the strike was carried out in response to what it called US “malicious acts”, including the recent killing of Iranian soldiers in the south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Iranian forces also struck a US base in Kuwait, targeting air-defence radar systems, weapons depots and other military equipment, while naval units hit American radar facilities in Oman, the IRGC said. Iran’s regular army said it had separately carried out drone strikes on US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain.

The Guard warned that Iran’s armed forces remained in full control of the Strait of Hormuz, and that oil and gas exports from the region would not resume “as long as the United States continued its malice”.

Iran’s Health Ministry said on Friday that at least 38 people had been killed and more than 400 wounded in US strikes on the country, mainly in southern provinces, since June 22. Hossein Kermanpour, the ministry’s head of public relations, said three women and one teenager were among the dead, while 22 women and nine people under the age of 18 were among the injured. Forty-seven of the wounded remained in hospital, he added.

Separately, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that at least eight people had been killed and 19 wounded in US strikes on the southern province of Hormozgan on Thursday night, with five bridges and a railway junction station said to be among the targets.
