Five people were arrested overnight as police carried out organised patrols at key points in urban areas across Cyprus, aimed at preventing serious crime, safeguarding public order and increasing the public’s sense of security.
The arrests were for offences including illegal presence in the Republic of Cyprus, illegal possession of drugs and assaulting a police officer.
During the operations, 456 vehicles were stopped for checks and 599 people travelling in them were checked. Police also carried out 32 inspections of premises to tackle offending, which led to five reports for prosecution.
During traffic checks, 263 reports were made for various traffic offences, and ten cases are being investigated.
Of the reports, 100 were for exceeding the speed limit, and seven vehicles were detained as part of police inquiries. A total of 140 breath tests were carried out, resulting in four reports.
Police said patrols aimed at preventing and suppressing crime would continue daily, with an increased police presence, targeted checks and immediate operational action, to protect the public and safeguard public order.
