Sovereign Base Areas Police summer operations are continuing at pace, with 27 arrests confirmed over the past week for various offences.
Police say the coordinated operations, carried out in both the eastern and western areas, aim to prevent and detect crime, enhance road safety, maintain public order and provide reassurance to local communities.
Figures show a combined total of 158 fixed penalty notices and written cautions have been issued for various road traffic offences, with a further 17 cases now under investigation for more serious violations. Road safety enforcement has also included 73 breath tests for alcohol, seven of which returned positive results.
The high-profile police presence has extended to the Marine Unit, which has recently taken delivery of new jet skis to help ensure the safety of beach-goers within the Sovereign Base Areas.
Dhekelia’s Temporary Superintendent, Marcos Petrou, said operations across the SBAs would continue, particularly this week, which marks the peak of the island’s holiday period. “Officers and specialist units will be focusing on the periods and locations where their presence can have the greatest impact on public safety,” he said.
With even larger crowds expected at the coast this weekend, he urged beach-goers to take precautions: “Don’t give thieves an easy opportunity. Keep valuables out of sight, lock your vehicles, and never leave personal belongings unattended on the beach.”
Temporary Superintendent Melina Papagregoriou, in Akrotiri, issued a similar warning to residents leaving their homes for the summer break. “As many people take advantage of the August holiday period, we encourage residents to take simple precautions to protect their homes, vehicles and personal belongings,” she said. “Properties should be properly secured when left unattended, and valuables should not be left visible or unsecured in vehicles.”
She added: “Residents must remain vigilant within their communities and should report any suspicious activity to police. Taking a few simple preventative measures can significantly reduce opportunities for acquisitive crime during the holiday period.”
