Foot-and-Mouth Disease Compensation Reaches €17.5 Million, Cyprus Officials Say

Compensation payments for losses linked to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak have reached €17.5 million, a senior Agriculture Ministry official told lawmakers Wednesday.

Andreas Grigoriou, the ministry’s director-general, told the House Agriculture Committee that €14.5 million had already been paid out to 107 affected farmers and producers.

He said four additional claims are under review by the Law Office, while three others have been rejected.

Grigoriou noted a positive development: no new cases of the disease have been detected in the free areas over the past three months.

A decree issued Tuesday allows the movement of cloven-hoofed animals for herd-rebuilding purposes and permits free grazing under certain conditions, he said.
