Government Spokesman: Cyprus-Egypt Relations at Particularly High Level

Relations between Cyprus and Egypt are at a particularly high level, with Nicosia describing Cairo as a stable, strategic pillar of its foreign policy and a key partner for security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Tuesday.

Speaking on the morning radio program Proino Dromologio, Letymbiotis said the president’s visit to Cairo confirms both countries’ will to further strengthen cooperation, particularly in the energy and defense sectors.

He noted that the participation of an Egyptian Armed Forces unit in the October 1 Independence Day parade carries strong symbolic weight, sending multiple messages about the shared direction of Nicosia and Cairo.

Asked to comment on reports concerning the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnector, Letymbiotis said the government has not abandoned its goal of completing the project, dismissing suggestions that Nicosia is having second thoughts.

He said, however, that the studies and data underpinning the project’s economic, investment and geopolitical assessments — a project that has been under discussion since 2012 — need to be updated so that decisions can be made based on current conditions.
