DISY Political Bureau sets Nov. 28 vote to pick 2028 presidential candidate

The Political Bureau of Cyprus’ main opposition party, Democratic Rally (DISY), voted unanimously to set the timetable for choosing its candidate for the 2028 presidential election, with candidacies due Oct. 26 and the internal party vote scheduled for Nov. 28.

The decision came at a meeting that lasted more than three hours and drew all 220 members of the body, along with other party officials and members, according to a party statement.

DISY said every proposal was heard and that members engaged in a lengthy and substantive exchange of views. The aim, it said, was to ensure a process marked by transparency and respect for the party’s charter and its members.

The bureau also unanimously urged all potential contenders for the party’s nomination to take part in the internal process and to state publicly that they will fully respect the verdict of party members.

It further appealed to all DISY members to turn out in large numbers for what it called a major democratic exercise.
