Is Keir Starmer about to become the new Tony Blair? Iraq and Ukraine – history goes round

The echoes of Tony Blair’s decision to send British troops to Iraq in 2003 still reverberate through the corridors of power and the collective memory of the British public.

Now, as Sir Keir Starmer contemplates deploying British troops to Ukraine, one cannot help but draw parallels and question the wisdom of such a move.

Blair’s decision to join the US-led invasion of Iraq was predicated on the now-debunked claim that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.

The Chilcot Report later revealed the flawed intelligence and lack of proper planning that led to a protracted conflict, resulting in the loss of countless lives and the destabilization of an entire region.

The British public was deeply divided, and the scars of that decision remain visible today.

Fast forward to 2025, and we find ourselves on the brink of another potential military intervention.

Starmer’s willingness to send British troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force raises serious concerns. Many people across Britain are appalled.

While the intention to support Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression is commendable, the lessons of Iraq should serve as a stark warning.

And, the desire to support Ukraine is understandable, the decision to deploy British troops must be approached with caution. You would think the Labour Party would have learned that lesson.
