The Coral cold front arrived in Cyprus on Thursday night, bringing with it temperatures significantly below the seasonal norms.
This Arctic blast, named “Coral,” is affecting southeastern Europe, including Cyprus, with a sudden and severe drop in temperatures. The cold front is characterized by strong winds and snowfall in some regions, creating a wintry landscape across the island.
On Friday, temperatures are expected to reach 13°C in the interior, 15°C along the coasts, and a chilly 5°C in the higher mountains, where frosty conditions will persist. Winds will be mainly north-westerly to northerly, moderate to strong, reaching up to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be rough, adding to the wintry atmosphere.
Overnight, temperatures will fall further, dropping to 6°C in the interior, 8°C on the coasts, and a frigid 3°C in the higher mountains. Frost is expected to continue, with winds remaining strong. The cold snap is forecast to last until Sunday, with temperatures remaining well below zero in the highest mountains for at least 72-96 hours. Snow showers are expected over the highest mountains, with the possibility of snow flurries or a wintry mix in some coastal areas.
The Coral cold front has put a strain on Cyprus’s power supply, with authorities warning of potential rolling blackouts due to increased electricity demand. Emergency measures have been implemented to avoid blackouts, including drawing power from renewable sources and neighboring regions.
