A protest against the “Limnes” Hospitality Center will be held on March 1, according to the community leader of Anglisidon.

Eleni Sakkada has expressed strong concern, on behalf of citizens and organizations in the community, regarding the planned operation of a Center for immigrants in Limnes.

The new facility, located near the Larnaca district village of Menoyia, is a significant project aimed at enhancing Cyprus’ capacity to manage migration pressures. With an expected completion by the end of the year, the project will cost over €100 million, co-financed by the European Union and Cyprus.

The center will have an initial capacity of 1,000 people and include facilities such as common activity areas, sports facilities, and areas for religious worship. It aims to address infrastructure limitations, improve asylum procedures, and facilitate the repatriation of migrants if they are not granted asylum.

Speaking on Saturday, Sakkada argued that the creation of this center may have negative consequences for the local community, such as a potential increase in crime and social tension in the area.

Cyprus has been grappling with significant immigration challenges.

The country has experienced a substantial increase in asylum seekers and migrants, particularly from Syria, Lebanon, and other conflict-affected regions.

This influx has overwhelmed the existing infrastructure, leading to overcrowded reception centers and strained resources. The situation has also sparked social tensions and concerns about safety and integration within local communities.
