Pope Francis’s condition continues to be critical after suffering a prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis earlier on Saturday, the Vatican has said.
The 88-year-old pontiff is “more unwell than yesterday” and has received blood transfusions, according to the statement.
The Vatican reported that Pope Francis remains alert and is in his armchair, but he requires a high flow of oxygen, and his prognosis remains guarded. He is currently being treated for pneumonia in both lungs at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
Francis has been hospitalized for the past week with double-sided pneumonia.
On Friday, his doctor held a press conference stating that the Pope was in better shape, having gotten out of bed and eaten breakfast.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse on Saturday when he experienced an asthma-like attack and received a blood transfusion due to low platelet counts.
Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges. In addition to his current battle with pneumonia, he has a history of lung problems, having had part of one lung removed during his youth due to an infection.
Despite these health issues, he has remained active and engaged in his duties as the head of the Catholic Church.
