A boat carrying 19 migrants from Venezuela and Colombia, along with two crew members, capsized off the coast of Panama on Friday evening.
The incident resulted in the death of an eight-year-old girl from Venezuela, according to Panama’s border agency, Senafront.
The boat, returning migrants to their home countries after their attempt to enter the United States, encountered high seas and bad weather northeast of Panama.
Despite the perilous conditions, the remaining passengers and crew were rescued alive.
Senafront’s statement highlights the reversal of the migrant flow, with the migrants traveling back via Mexico and Central America after giving up on their pursuit to enter the U.S.
