FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, which aims to connect Cyprus and Israel to the European electricity grid via Crete, is expected to resume in mid-April after being halted by Greece earlier this year, according to reports.
The Italian cable-laying ship Levoli Relume, currently undergoing maintenance in the Netherlands, is anticipated to restart operations near Karpathos-Kerpe.
During the pause, Cyprus, Greece, and France established a framework to ensure uninterrupted progress, with France playing a key role in addressing geopolitical concerns.
Media reports also highlighted interest from Chevron in two energy parcels south of Crete as part of recent developments tied to the project.
The GSI project involves an 898-kilometer-long undersea cable and is seen as a crucial step toward integrating the Eastern Mediterranean into Europe’s energy network.
