FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Hungarian authorities have linked a recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) to Slovakia’s Felvidek region, according to Gergely Gulyas, minister of the prime minister’s office.
The outbreak, which has spread to two sites in Gyor-Moson-Sopron County, marks Hungary’s first cases of FMD in over fifty years.
Strict containment measures include a 3-kilometer protection zone and a 10-kilometer surveillance area, along with bans on livestock movement, restrictions on grazing and hunting, and temporary zoo closures. Vaccination efforts are underway, but infected animals are being culled.
Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy emphasized that all susceptible livestock within the designated zones must be slaughtered by March 31 to control the spread of the virus. Authorities are continuing their epidemiological investigation.
