FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Cypriot government has proposed allowing commercial ships under the Cypriot flag to access a Turkish port, in a bid to lift a decades-long embargo imposed by Ankara in 1987, according to Greek newspaper TA NEA.
The report claims Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides personally submitted the proposal to Turkey’s leadership.
The plan would enable roughly 1,100 Cypriot-flagged vessels to dock at a Turkish port, while offering concessions on entry visas for Turkish nationals in the European Union, limited to Turkish businessmen.
A source from the Cypriot government reportedly expressed skepticism about Turkey’s commitment to follow through on the proposal, while affirming that Nicosia is prepared to act if Ankara demonstrates willingness to proceed.
