FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Philippine authorities raised the alert level for Mount Bulusan on Monday following a phreatic eruption that lasted 24 minutes and sent a 4.5-km plume into the sky.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology elevated the alert to level 1, indicating low-level unrest.

The institute warned of further eruptions and advised residents to avoid the 4-km danger zone.

Pilots were also urged to steer clear of the summit. Ashfall blanketed nearby villages after the eruption, which produced rumbling sounds 15 minutes prior.

Mount Bulusan is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines, a country prone to natural disasters due to its location in the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

Other volcanoes, such as Mount Mayon and Taal, are also on alert level 1, while Mount Kanlaon remains at level 3, signaling magmatic unrest and a heightened risk of hazardous eruptions.
