Bird Flu Detected in Arctic Foxes on Svalbard

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been found in arctic foxes in Norway for the first time, according to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute. Four fox pups in the Barentsburg area of Svalbard tested positive for the virus.

The detection follows reports in late July of several sick foxes near the Russian settlement.

Authorities initially observed three ailing pups, euthanizing two for welfare concerns.

Due to increased vigilance for rabies and proximity to human habitation, the remaining litter was also put down — one of them showed symptoms.

Three adult foxes near the den were also euthanized, officials said.

The Governor of Svalbard confirmed the findings in a press release, noting the significance of the outbreak in a previously unaffected species.

The discovery raises concerns about wildlife transmission and the spread of avian flu in Arctic regions.
