FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A court in Cyprus has ordered an eight-day detention for a 36-year-old man accused of violating animal welfare laws after allegedly dismembering a kangaroo.
Police said they received reports Wednesday that “two people were allegedly cutting up an animal using knives” in a parking lot in Dherinya.
Officers arrived to find one suspect had fled while the other, a 36-year-old man, remained at the scene.
Authorities found plastic bags containing a chopped-up animal, an axe, and five knives. The suspect told officers “the animal was a kangaroo and that he had received it from another person in the Paralimni area.”
A Veterinary Services officer later confirmed the remains belonged to “a dismembered adult kangaroo,” which was taken for further examination.
Police said the man had been living in Cyprus illegally since his asylum request was rejected in 2022. He was arrested under a court warrant.
