Britain will meet with allies next week to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping without paying tolls to Iran, Reuters reported Friday, citing an official familiar with the talks.
British foreign ministry officials are expected to meet counterparts from countries that joined a virtual April 2 meeting hosted by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on restoring free passage through the strait.
The discussions will cover “coordinated economic and political measures, including possible sanctions,” as well as efforts to secure the release of ships and crews currently stuck in the waterway, the official said.
More than 40 countries and several international organizations, including the European Union and the International Maritime Organization, took part in the April 2 meeting, which examined potential diplomatic, economic and political steps in response to Iran’s actions.
