A smart farm designed for ships made its debut at Marintec China 2025, offering offshore workers and residents of remote areas year-round access to fresh vegetables, fruits and mushrooms.

Developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), the hybrid cultivation facility uses advanced environmental controls and a “vegetable-mushroom symbiosis” system that recycles carbon dioxide and reduces energy consumption.

Yang Wenwu, chairman of CSSC International Engineering Co., Ltd., said the system cuts electricity use to less than 6 kilowatt-hours per kilogram of vegetables, compared with a global average of 10.

The pesticide-free farm can grow more than 120 varieties of produce and is engineered to withstand harsh conditions such as corrosion and vibrations at sea.

CSSC said the innovation will help overcome food supply challenges in deep-sea, polar and island environments, where fresh vegetables have long been a rare luxury.
