FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus achieved a 43% reduction in serious road injuries over the decade leading up to 2023, according to the latest report by the European Road Safety Program Road Safety PIN (Performance Index).

The report, which includes data from EU member states, along with Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Serbia, and the United Kingdom, highlights a significant improvement for Cyprus.

However, on a broader scale, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) report notes that the EU as a whole has fallen short of its target to reduce serious road injuries by 50% between 2020 and 2030, achieving only a 13% reduction so far.

The report estimates approximately 1,291,000 road injuries occur annually in the EU, with 141,000 classified as serious.

Many of these injuries lead to permanent disabilities and long-term challenges. For Cyprus specifically, 226 serious road injuries were recorded in 2024, reflecting progress yet underscoring the ongoing need for improvement in road safety.
