FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus and Greece remain at odds over the Great Sea Interconnector, a proposed underwater electricity cable connecting the two countries, media reports suggest.

The debate centers on whether consumers will bear the cost.

The Great Sea Interconnector is a massive underwater electricity cable project designed to link the power grids of Cyprus, Greece, and eventually Israel.

It’s one of the most ambitious energy infrastructure efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean—and a key piece of Europe’s clean energy puzzle.

President Nikos Christodoulides and Energy Minister Yiorgos Papanastasiou have said the project will not lead to higher charges.

Finance Minister Makis Keravnos, however, cited reports from independent institutions suggesting the plan is not viable and warned, in a media interview, that consumers could face a €25 million fee.

Keravnos’s comments drew scrutiny after Christodoulides declined to respond publicly. Local media reported that the remarks left Papanastasiou politically exposed.

Three days later, Presidential Press Office Director Viktoras Papadopoulos issued a statement saying the ministers’ positions were not contradictory. He emphasized that government decisions are collective and made in the public interest.
