FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Coral Bay has been officially designated a plastic-free beach, becoming the ninth beach in Cyprus and the first in the Akamas municipality to receive the certification.
A ceremony marking the designation was held on the beach, attended by representatives from international tour operator Tui, including Tui Care Foundation’s board chairman Thomas Ellerbeck.
Akamas mayor Marinos Lambrou called the certification “an important moment for our region,” adding that the municipality remains committed to protecting coastal areas and promoting responsible environmental practices.
Coral Bay, one of Cyprus’ most popular beaches, is known for its clear waters and golden sands.
The designation is part of a broader national push to reduce plastic waste along the island’s coastlines, ensuring cleaner beaches for locals and visitors alike.
