FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Dozens of Electricity Authority crews are working around the clock to repair the devastation left behind by sweeping wildfires and bring power back to Cyprus’ scorched communities.
Fire spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou said fully restoring the network across the burnt areas will be a lengthy process. Early estimates suggest more than 400 utility poles were torched, with 75 already removed from dangerous locations.
Papadopoulou explained that entire transformers will need replacing, while a temporary 3.5-metre overhead medium-voltage line is up and running to help patch the damaged conductors.
Papadopoulou said the priority is getting electricity safely back to the affected residents. To speed things up, drones have been deployed for precise damage assessment.
Locals are urged to call the four-digit hotline 1800 to report any property damage, and are reminded to have their household connections inspected to ensure safe restoration of service.
