FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Limassol remains on edge following a devastating fire that tore through the district’s rural communities.

While the main blaze has been contained, firefighting teams are still stationed in the affected areas, prepared to respond to any sudden flare-ups. Authorities warn that although there are no active fronts, the risk of rekindling remains high across the scorched terrain.

Overnight, fire crews tackled several flare-ups, managing to extinguish them before they could spread further.

Damage assessment teams from the District Administration are continuing their work, documenting the extent of destruction across the region.

According to Limassol’s deputy district officer, Elektra Panayiotou, preliminary reports show that 191 homes were affected, with 93 completely destroyed in 15 villages.

In addition, around 120 vehicles were lost to the fire, along with 31 other structures including caravans, storage units, and a restaurant.

The hardest-hit communities include Souni-Zanatzia, Agios Therapontas, Lofou, and Vouni, where the damage has been described as widespread and severe.

Adding to the crisis, local police and MMAD units patrolled the disaster zone overnight following reports of looting in damaged homes, especially in the area of Souni-Zanatzia.

Authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious activity and ensure that any structural damage to their properties is documented.
