Cyprus ranks 62nd out of 147 countries in the 2026 World Happiness Report, continuing a steady slide in the annual index.
The island has fallen from 39th place in 2019 to 43rd in 2023 and 50th in 2024.
The report — produced by Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre with Gallup and the United Nations — assesses countries based on GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, generosity, freedom and perceptions of corruption.
Finland topped the rankings for the ninth straight year, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Costa Rica, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Israel, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
The United States ranked 23rd, Canada 25th and the United Kingdom 29th.
Report editor Jan‑Emmanuel De Neve said heavy social media use is linked to lower happiness among people under 25, noting that “heavy usage is associated with much lower well‑being.”
