Cyprus Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Michalis Damianos took part in the European Union Energy Council meeting on Dec. 15, where ministers discussed the bloc’s long‑term financing framework, new measures for European energy networks and the link between energy and security.
EU ministers reached partial agreement on the “Connecting Europe Facility” under the 2028‑2034 Multiannual Financial Framework.
The proposal provides a legal basis for investment in trans‑European transport and energy infrastructure, including military mobility and cross‑border renewable energy projects. Damianos welcomed the deal, stressing provisions for island member states, better integration of the internal energy market, ending energy isolation and easing congestion in electricity interconnections.
He called for a fair and transparent framework that takes regional specificities into account.
The meeting also included an orientation debate on the European Commission’s energy networks package, announced Dec. 10.
The initiative aims to modernize and expand networks to support rapid electrification and ensure affordable, secure and clean energy.
Damianos highlighted the importance of completing the electricity market and promoting interconnection projects, while urging timely upgrades and implementation to meet EU goals on energy prices and competitiveness. He said the vision of a genuine European Energy Union was not limited to infrastructure and markets but represented a shared commitment to equal participation in the energy transition.
The 27 ministers also exchanged views with NATO Deputy Secretary‑General Radmila Šekerinska on the evolving energy security landscape, increasingly tied to the protection of critical infrastructure. Damianos said EU‑NATO cooperation was vital to address complex challenges and should be based on dialogue, shared understanding and mutually beneficial collaboration to strengthen Europe’s energy resilience.
Finally, Damianos presented the work program of Cyprus’s presidency of the EU Council in the energy sector, emphasizing the goal of a connected, secure Energy Union that fully harnesses renewable and innovative sources.
He underlined the importance of affordable energy for households, businesses and industry, supporting a clean and sustainable transition.
