Cyprus is likely to see a record number of candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Chief Returning Officer, Elikkos Elia, said Monday.
Elia said that 1,195 polling stations will operate on election day, staffed by nearly 7,000 officials, including 1,185 police officers. The final number of candidates will be confirmed on 6 May, when nominations are formally submitted.
Asked about the continued use of opaque ballot boxes rather than transparent ones, Elia said the metal boxes ensure the secrecy of the vote and that ballots cannot be placed inside envelopes.
