NICOSIA — The continued detention of five displaced Greek Cypriots by Turkish-controlled authorities in the north is directly tied to a landmark ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, the foreign minister said Tuesday.
The individuals were arrested after attempting to visit their properties in the occupied areas, a move the government has condemned as illegal and politically motivated.
The case, according to the minister, is closely connected to Cyprus’s fourth interstate application against Turkey at the European court.
He emphasized the importance of ongoing international oversight to ensure Turkey complies with the court’s decision, which addresses violations of property rights and personal freedoms stemming from the 1974 invasion.
The detentions have reignited calls for accountability and reinforced demands for the protection of displaced persons seeking access to their ancestral homes.
