Cyprus issues “red alert” for wildfires as risk peaks on Thursday

The Department of Forestry has placed the risk of forest fires at “Red Alert” — its highest level — for Thursday, warning that blazes could ignite and spread rapidly across the island.

The Department urged the public to exercise particular caution during outdoor activities and to avoid entirely any actions that could spark a fire.

Anyone spotting smoke or flames was asked to report it immediately, either to the Forestry Department on 1407 or the Fire Department on 112.

The Department stressed that starting a fire is an offence under the Forest Law and the Prevention and Extinguishing of Fires in the Countryside Law, carrying severe penalties for those found responsible.
