FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Opposition lawmakers criticized the government over delays in launching the country’s emergency alert number 112, which remains inactive more than two years into the administration’s term.
The criticism intensified following a recent wildfire in Limassol that killed two residents and destroyed homes, livestock and entire communities.
Officials confirmed that the 112 system — designed to notify citizens during emergencies such as fires and earthquakes — had not been implemented, despite European Union standards.
In a statement, opposition leaders called the delay “unacceptable,” adding that early warnings could have saved lives.
The government attributed the holdup to ongoing procedural and technical reviews.
Local media commentary mocked the state’s emergency protocols, comparing the current response — which included ringing bells and using loudspeakers — to smoke signal methods used centuries ago.
