FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Lawmakers gathered Tuesday for an emergency session tackling the fallout from recent wildfires and the growing controversy over multiple state pensions for officials.

In a joint meeting, the Committees on Interior, Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environment heard from 79 invited guests, including the ministers of Interior, Agriculture, Defense and Justice, along with the deputy minister for Innovation.

Senior officials from key agencies—including Civil Defense, Police, Fire Service and EMAK—also attended.

Local authorities from Limassol and Paphos joined environmental and farming groups, as well as commissioners for the Environment, Mountain Communities, and Citizen Affairs.

Discussions focused on agency readiness, resources, and staffing for wildfire prevention and response, as well as immediate aid for affected farmers and herders.

The session followed the release of internal reports detailing fire suppression efforts.

Lawmakers also examined environmental damage, illegal landfill operations, and reforestation funding, alongside the Forestry Department’s fire prevention strategy.
