FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – President Nikos Christodoulides defended his administration’s economic policies in response to protests organized by the opposition party AKEL over rising living costs.

Speaking to reporters, Christodoulides emphasized the right to protest but suggested that such demonstrations do not yield electoral advantages, contrary to what some might believe.

The president highlighted his government’s allocation of over €700 million to support households and businesses, attributing this to responsible fiscal management. He also pointed to the upcoming repayment of a national loan, which he blamed on what he described as irresponsible policies by previous administrations that led to economic hardship and reliance on social welfare programs.

Christodoulides announced plans to travel to the United States on Wednesday to attract foreign investments, expressing confidence in the success of his visit. The trip is part of broader efforts to bolster the Cypriot economy and address ongoing financial challenges.

The protests, led by AKEL, have drawn attention to issues such as high energy costs, housing affordability, and stagnant wages. AKEL has criticized the government for being out of touch with the struggles of ordinary citizens, calling for immediate measures to alleviate economic pressures.

The demonstrations come amid growing public discontent over the cost of living, with many households reportedly struggling to make ends meet. The government has faced mounting pressure to implement reforms and provide relief to those most affected by economic challenges.
