FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The appointment of Angela Olguín and the European Union’s special envoy for Cyprus demonstrates a firm commitment to resuming peace negotiations, President Nikos Christodoulides said Wednesday.
Speaking at a reception hosted by the British High Commissioner to mark King Charles III’s birthday, Christodoulides stressed that the EU envoy’s involvement would support United Nations efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
He noted that Cyprus will remain an EU member state even after a settlement is reached, while Turkey continues to express its interest in closer ties with Europe.
The president reaffirmed his dedication to pursuing peace and reunification by adhering to UN Security Council resolutions. He also thanked the United Kingdom for its support in restarting negotiations as a permanent member of the Security Council.
Christodoulides described Cyprus’ relationship with Britain as a strategic partnership that continues to strengthen across multiple areas. He cited the recent visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Cyprus as historically significant.
He also underscored the importance of further deepening bilateral relations ahead of Cyprus’ upcoming presidency of the EU Council.
