The government in Cyprus has approved an €88 increase to the national minimum wage, setting the new rate at €1,088, a move that immediately drew criticism from both employers and trade unions, the daily Politis reports.

The paper said employers described the 8.8% rise as excessive, while unions argued the increase was too small for low‑income workers and accused the government of siding with businesses.

Union leaders have demanded an explanation of how the new figure was calculated and are expected to coordinate their next steps in response.

Under the current system, the €1,088 minimum wage applies only to employees who have worked more than six consecutive months.

For those with less than six months of continuous employment, the minimum wage will be €979, up from €900.
