The Greek Cypriot side is seeking to intensify momentum on the Cyprus issue, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Monday.
Speaking on the state radio program Proino Dromologio, Letymbiotis stated that upon President Nikos Christodoulides’ return to Cyprus, efforts will be made to arrange a meeting with newly elected Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
Christodoulides attempted to contact Erhürman on Sunday, but the communication did not materialize. Letymbiotis described Erhürman’s stated support for a return to negotiations as “a very positive step.”
He added that the six-point framework proposed by U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres remains both the starting point and the catalyst for reaching the final stretch toward a solution.
Letymbiotis also highlighted the upcoming visit of U.N. envoy María Ángela Holguín and her contacts in Cyprus, as well as the informal expanded meeting that is expected to follow, as key developments in the process.
