FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Cyprus’ maritime industry at the 36th General Annual Meeting of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC), emphasizing its role in economic growth and international recognition.

Christodoulides highlighted the expansion of the Cyprus Ship Registry, which has grown by 18%—its highest level in 25 years. The number of companies registered under the Cyprus Tonnage Tax System also increased by 15%. He noted rising global interest in Cyprus as a maritime hub, citing discussions with shipping firms in New York and Finland.

The government is advancing policies to enhance Cyprus’ shipping sector, including initiatives in technology, research, and pleasure yachts. A national strategy for cruise tourism, approved last October, is progressing, with Lemesos selected as a home port for Mediterranean cruises.

Christodoulides acknowledged challenges such as geopolitical instability, the green transition, and workforce shortages. He reiterated Cyprus’ support for the International Maritime Organization’s Net-Zero Framework and stressed the need for a strong EU maritime policy.

With Cyprus set to assume the EU Council Presidency in 2026, shipping will be a priority, including an informal ministerial meeting in Lemesos. Christodoulides congratulated CSC’s new leadership and praised outgoing President Themis Papadopoulos for his contributions.
