FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus plans to launch an intelligent traffic light system by summer 2027, aimed at reducing journey times by up to 25% and easing urban congestion.
The €6.2 million initiative, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, will begin with 125 signal junctions in Nicosia and Limassol, with an expansion capability to 500 intersections nationwide.
Similar systems in other countries have cut traffic by 10% to 35%. The system will use real-time traffic data to adjust green light durations, prioritize public transport and emergency vehicles, and coordinate junctions to minimize stop-start driving.
Expected benefits include a 15-30% reduction in traffic delays, up to 28% shorter public transport travel times, and an 8-10% decrease in fuel consumption.
The project aims to modernize Cyprus’ urban traffic flow and promote sustainability.
