The Department of Forestry has issued recommendations reminding the public that lighting fires in the countryside is prohibited except in specially designated picnic and camping areas for food preparation.
The Department urges the public to avoid cutting or uprooting wildflowers and shrubs, as many are strictly protected and some are endangered.
Visitors to forests and the countryside are also advised to keep the area clean by collecting and disposing of all trash properly to prevent it from being scattered by animals.
Lighting fires within state forests or within 2km of their edges is a serious offense under the Forestry Law of 2012, punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to €50,000, or both.
The Department also warns that some pine trees are being attacked by the pine beetle.
The public should avoid sitting under or near affected trees. Anyone who develops a skin problem after contact should seek medical advice.
