Vets in Cyprus have issued a warning about the dangers posed by the pine processionary moth, a forest pest that emerges in March-April.

The moths can cause severe reactions in dogs, including irritation, excessive salivation, swelling, and inflammation in the mouth.

In severe cases, dogs may experience difficulty breathing, shock, and purple discoloration of the tongue due to reduced blood flow.

Other symptoms include fever, rapid heartbeat, and facial swelling.

Even sniffing the insects can cause nasal inflammation.

Pet owners are urged to contact their veterinarian immediately if their dog comes into contact with a pine processionary moth, as symptoms may take a few days to appear and can be life-threatening.

THE MOTH

The pine processionary moth is a forest pest known for its destructive larvae that feed on the needles of pine trees, forming distinctive, silken nests.

These caterpillars pose a significant danger not only to trees but also to animals and humans.

When threatened, the caterpillars release thousands of tiny, toxic hairs that can cause severe allergic reactions, skin irritations, and respiratory issues in humans and animals.
