Cyprus’s snakes are harmless, encounters can be minimized

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – With the summer in full bloom,  residents have been to take precautions against encounters with snakes.

Only one of the island’s eight snake species—the blunt-nosed viper (Macrovipera lebetina), or fina—poses a serious risk to humans due to its potent venom.

Two other venomous species, the Montpellier snake (Malpolon insignitus) and the European cat snake (Telescopus fallax), have mild venom that does not threaten human health.

With no effective snake repellents available, officials advise limiting conditions that attract them. Keeping properties clear of clutter, cutting tall grass, and sealing cracks can help reduce encounters.

For outdoor safety, residents should wear closed shoes and long trousers, use a stick to disturb tall grass before stepping, and avoid sudden movements when encountering a snake.

If bitten by a viper, authorities urge immediate medical attention while minimizing movement. Outdated methods such as sucking out venom or tying off the wound should be avoided.
