The death toll from a collision between a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol vessel and a boat carrying migrants off the island of Chios has risen to 15, local authorities said Wednesday.
State broadcaster ERT reported that one of the 24 people rescued later died in hospital from her injuries. Fourteen bodies were recovered earlier from the sea. The victims were 11 men and four women, according to the Coast Guard and health officials.
The collision occurred at about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Several children were among the injured, along with two pregnant women who reportedly suffered miscarriages. Most survivors sustained minor injuries, the National Emergency Aid Center said.
Search and rescue efforts are continuing amid concerns that more people may be missing. Four Coast Guard vessels, a private boat with volunteer divers and a Hellenic Air Force helicopter are involved in the operation.
